Can I use a German certified translation abroad?
Need to present a German document to an organisation abroad? Begin with its instructions rather than assuming German certification fits every purpose.

The short answer
Use abroad depends on the destination, organisation and procedure. Ask about language, certification, translator qualifications and any further steps. Translation certification and authentication of the source document are separate questions.
Obtain usable instructions for the assignment
Identify the actual recipient as well as the country. A university, court and government office may request different evidence. Obtain the current checklist or exact translation instructions, including any guidance inside an online portal.
Ask whether a locally authorised translator is required or a version prepared in Germany can be used. Read a term such as certified translation in the context of that particular recipient’s instructions.
Separate the document, translation and additional confirmation
Translation certification does not automatically authenticate the source record. An apostille on a document likewise does not itself certify translation accuracy. If further evidence is requested, identify the document and signature to which it must relate.
The Federal Foreign Office explains a possible additional court confirmation concerning a translator’s status or signature. Establish whether your purpose needs that step beforehand. Translating a document does not itself issue an apostille on its original.

Agree the sequence before work starts
Send the instructions with the record. Mention any attachment or confirmation that has yet to be obtained. This helps define the right scope from the start and avoid unnecessary later work.
Also agree the number of issued copies, address and deadline. International delivery can involve extra charges and longer transport. An advance digital copy only helps with submission where the organisation accepts it at that stage.
Your next steps
Identify the country, organisation and purpose.
Obtain current translation and certification instructions.
Coordinate any source-document steps before translation.
Agree format, copies, deadline and international delivery.
More questions
Is a German certified translation accepted worldwide?
A blanket worldwide promise would not be reliable. Check the actual recipient and current instructions.
Does every translation for use abroad need an apostille?
No. Establish first which confirmation is required on which document.
Does a translation alone complete my application?
The recipient specifies the full application package. Translation does not replace other required evidence.
