Are translations prepared abroad accepted in Germany?

Already have a translation from your country of origin? Assess its suitability for the actual application before ordering a second version as a precaution.

The short answer

A translation is not automatically suitable or unsuitable simply because of where it was prepared. Ask the recipient about translator qualifications, scope and source requirements. Applicable cross-border service rules also matter for translations from EU and EEA countries.

Read the recipient’s instructions precisely

Look for statements about language, qualifications and certification. A request for a certified translation without further detail may be unclear. Ask which evidence of the translator’s status is needed and whether your existing version can be checked provisionally.

The Federal Foreign Office describes acceptance of foreign translations in the context of the relevant procedure and refers to European requirements. This provides neither worldwide guaranteed acceptance nor a blanket requirement to have every foreign translation replaced.

Assemble information for assessment

Collect the original-language document, full translation and any evidence of translator authorisation. Identify the issuing country, translated languages and intended recipient. A stamp on the final page alone does not describe everything in the document.

Check that the version includes all pages now requested. A summary prepared for an earlier purpose may be insufficient. Also look for differences in names, subsequent entries or a newly issued source record.

Respond to a specific issue

If concerns are raised, ask what is missing: evidence of qualification, a page, the correct language direction or a different format? A precise answer helps you obtain the right supporting material or request appropriate new work.

If a new translation is needed, send us the current source, the reason and the existing version. That can help trace terms already used. It does not promise adoption of another translator’s certification or simply adding another stamp.

Your next steps

  1. Collect the complete existing translation and its source.

  2. Ask precisely which qualifications and language are required.

  3. Distinguish missing evidence from missing translated content.

  4. Then plan an addition, revision or new translation as appropriate.

More questions

Are all translations prepared abroad invalid?

No. A blanket statement ignores both the particular procedure and applicable European rules.

Does an embassy confirmation always settle the issue?

Additional confirmation does not resolve every question about scope or suitability. Check what the recipient actually requires.

Can you assess an existing foreign translation?

Send the source, translation and recipient instructions so we can clarify the possible assignment. No outcome is promised in advance.
