When is a NAATI translation needed for an Australian visa?

NAATI is a specific Australian credential. Home Affairs distinguishes applications made inside and outside Australia.

The short answer

Home Affairs requires English translations of non-English records. For applicants in Australia, its guidance requests the NAATI practitioner number; outside Australia it specifies the translator’s full name, address, phone number and language qualifications. Also check your particular visa checklist and agree the required format in advance.

Record your application location and visa category

Tell us whether you are inside or outside Australia when applying and which visa is involved. Include the current translation instructions with the source files.

The published Home Affairs guidance expressly distinguishes these situations. The term NAATI alone therefore does not establish what is required for every application lodged outside Australia.

Check the required credential in advance

If your actual checklist requires a NAATI credential, confirm that this route is available. German sworn status is a different qualification; an ordinary estimate does not confirm NAATI accreditation.

If a particular confirmation with contact and qualification details is required instead, identify those fields in your enquiry. This helps establish a clear agreement about the output.

Prepare a coherent English document set

Separate civil records, qualification evidence and other selected documents. Match every translation to its source and keep documented name spellings traceable throughout the set.

Keep drafts outside your upload folder and compare final versions with your checklist before submission. Record unresolved additional requirements rather than assuming they are automatically included.

Your next steps

  1. Record the visa category and application location.

  2. Save the current translation instructions.

  3. Confirm the required credential and output format.

  4. Match final English versions with their sources.
