Guide · Certified translations

Can an existing or self-written translation be certified afterwards?

Already have a translation but need certification for an application? Supply the complete source document as well as the translated text for assessment.

The short answer

Adding a stamp alone does not turn an existing text into a suitable certified translation. The responsible translator must examine the source and translation and take responsibility for the certification. Whether revision or a fresh translation is needed can only be assessed after both have been seen.

What needs checking in an existing translation?

Assessment includes accuracy, completeness and identification of the correct source. Names, figures, stamp text and handwritten entries cannot be omitted merely because they seemed irrelevant to the first draft. The language and issued format must also suit the current purpose.

An editable file can help with assessment but does not replace the source. Explain who produced the translation and whether you changed it. If a signed version already exists, include a complete image of that issued version as well.

Self-written and AI translations

Your draft may help identify technical terms or spellings of names used previously. It does not supply independent professional certification. Machine-generated text may read smoothly while omitting content or assigning it incorrectly; fluency is not proof of completeness.

Do not upload confidential records to public translation services without checking their handling of your information. For our assessment, submit existing files with the recipient’s instructions. Requesting a signature under unchecked text does not define a suitable assignment.

How much work might be required?

Reviewing someone else’s text may take as much work as translating it again. Apparent savings can disappear where the format, scope or terminology differ substantially. A lower price or earlier completion cannot therefore be promised in advance.

First establish which work can be undertaken for your purpose. Say whether you need a newly certified version or have received a specific objection to an earlier translation. If we handled the earlier order, include its reference.

Your next steps

  1. Provide the complete source and existing translation.

  2. Identify its author, format and any later changes.

  3. Include the recipient’s instructions.

  4. Agree assessment and any new work beforehand.

More questions

Can you simply stamp my text?

Certification requires responsible examination of the source and translation. We first need to assess whether the existing version can be used.

Will an AI translation make the job cheaper?

Not necessarily. Checking and correcting it can involve substantial work.

What if my translation is already certified?

Supply the full issued copy and its source. An addition, another issued copy and a fresh translation are different requests.
