How do I prepare Thai records for translation and authentication in Germany?

Thai birth, marriage or name records may require authentication and German translation. Note the embassy’s instructions that changed in July 2026.

Reviewed on 27 October 2026

The short answer

First ask the German recipient whether legalisation is needed. Since 1 July 2026, the Bangkok embassy requires prior Thai foreign-ministry authentication with the appropriate endorsement; the former replacement procedure no longer applies. Translation is not required for that authentication step. Agree translation for later German use separately.

Confirm the current authentication route

Compare older checklists with current embassy guidance. Record the document type, issuer and German recipient and clarify the particular authentication required.

Plan the competent authorities’ steps separately from the translation assignment. Translation does not issue legalisation; an older translation does not establish that later endorsements have been covered.

Organise spellings and connected records

Provide all connected pages, including reverse sides and existing endorsements. Match changes of name and differing Latin-script spellings to the relevant people and records.

Provide an existing passport spelling as a reference. Do not alter the source yourself; discuss the treatment of differing name versions before completion.

Check the required translator status

For its own consideration of translations, the embassy states that translators must be admitted by a court in Germany. Also check the actual German recipient’s instructions.

Send the final records with language, purpose and deadline to establish scope. A general estimate does not automatically include processing by Thai or German authorities.

Your next steps

  1. Ask the German recipient which authentication is needed.

  2. Check current embassy instructions and prior authentication.

  3. Organise complete records and name references.

  4. Enquire about German translation with the required status.

More questions

Current embassy guidance does not require translations for that step. Later German use may still require them.

The guidance effective from July 2026 no longer provides that procedure. Check the current route.

Is official processing included in translation?

Not automatically. Translation and additional official services must be agreed separately.
