When do I need translations for a ZAB Statement of Comparability?
A ZAB Statement of Comparability assesses a foreign higher education qualification. Base your translation assignment on the document checklist generated for that application.
Reviewed on 27 October 2026
The short answer
ZAB identifies translation requirements in its pre-check and online application. An additionally requested translation does not replace the original-language document. Commission work using your specific checklist, rather than assuming that every university record needs a certified translation.
Use the pre-check for your qualification
Have your institution, qualification title and country available when obtaining the checklist. Save the result alongside the records to which it applies.
ZAB distinguishes a Statement of Comparability from professional recognition. If you intend to enter a regulated profession, check that separate procedure; translation alone does not grant a professional licence.

Prepare matching sources and translations
Give each file a clear name identifying document type and qualification. Check page order, reverse sides and attachments before requesting the scope. Keep an unchanged copy of your source files.
Match the finished translation to the agreed source. A self-assembled abridgement can make identification harder; discuss any proposed extracts in advance against the checklist.
Track the application and translation separately
Record which documents have been uploaded and which remain in preparation. This helps prevent different versions of the same certificate or transcript being used unintentionally.
If ZAB requests additional records, include the actual request in your enquiry. The assignment can then address that addition without rebuilding the whole package without a clear scope.
Your next steps
Complete the pre-check for your qualification and country.
Mark the translations requested in the checklist.
Enquire with complete sources and the checklist.
Match final translations to the correct upload.
More questions
Must I always translate everything?
Follow the individual requirements in the pre-check or application. Check each requested record.
Is ZAB the same as uni-assist?
No. Use the checklist for the particular assessment or application rather than mixing their document requirements.
Can I upload just the translation?
ZAB states that a requested translation does not replace the original-language record. Keep both clearly matched.
