Guide · Certified translations
Which certified translations does the German registry office require?
The documents needed for a marriage involving foreign records depend on your circumstances. Begin with the checklist supplied by your responsible German registry office.

The short answer
The registry office specifies the records, translations and supporting evidence for your procedure. Commission translation against that list. Translating certificates and interpreting at registration or the ceremony are separate services and may require different preparation.
Obtain your personal document list first
Ask for the list for your actual procedure: marriage registration, a declaration about names or another civil-status matter. Birth records, evidence of civil status and earlier decisions may be relevant, but they do not form a complete standard list for everyone.
Clarify document versions, source format and any authentication requirements before translation. Berlin’s service page illustrates particular requirements for marriages involving foreign documents. Do not automatically apply its details to a different responsible office.

Prepare names and spellings together
Assemble passport spellings and existing German records. Where alphabets differ, a required transliteration can look different from the spelling in a passport. Flag existing differences in your initial enquiry.
Do not alter a foreign record yourself to make spellings appear consistent. A translation represents its source. Establishing your legal name is a separate matter for the responsible registry office.
Coordinate written documents and interpreting separately
Note when the full set of documents is due and whether further appointments follow. Agree translation scope early and mention any apostille or attachment that is still missing. Adding material later may require further work.
If an interpreter is required for a meeting or ceremony, clarify the date, place, languages and qualifications separately. Completing a written translation does not book an interpreter. Equally, an interpreting enquiry does not automatically include translating certificates.
Your next steps
Obtain the responsible registry office’s personal checklist.
Clarify source format and supporting evidence.
Provide passport spellings and existing name records.
Plan written translation and any interpreting assignment separately.
More questions
Is a birth-certificate translation enough for every marriage registration?
No general answer covers everyone. The documents depend on the procedure and your circumstances.
Does an international certificate always remove the need for translation?
Check the particular certificate and instructions. Being multilingual alone does not settle every case.
Is an interpreter for the ceremony included automatically?
No. An interpreting assignment is requested separately for its date, location and language combination.
