Which translations do I need to register an overseas marriage in Germany?

After marrying abroad, registration in the German marriage register may be an option. It is a separate procedure from translating the marriage certificate.

The short answer

First clarify eligibility and jurisdiction for registration. Published registry-office guidance states there is no general obligation to register the marriage retrospectively. If you apply, the competent office specifies certificates, translations and additional evidence; the marriage certificate alone may not be sufficient.

Separate registration from evidence of the marriage

Record the intended use and whether retrospective registration is actually wanted. A foreign marriage certificate may also be requested for another specific administrative procedure.

Organise records for both spouses

List the marriage certificate and any additionally requested birth, name or previous-marriage evidence. Match each file to a person and event so versions are not confused.

Previous marriages can lead to requests for additional decisions or certificates. Separately establish whether a foreign divorce needs recognition rather than expecting translation alone to resolve that question.

Coordinate language and source format

Ask whether an existing multilingual certificate or translation is accepted. Distinguish originals, official copies and ordinary images when recording the required submission format.

Send the confirmed checklist with complete translation sources. Keep final versions with the registry office’s answer so later additions can be handled precisely.

Your next steps

  1. Clarify purpose, jurisdiction and eligibility.

  2. Check both spouses’ records against the office’s checklist.

  3. Check existing language versions and source formats.

  4. Enquire about required translations with complete sources.
