Registering a birth abroad in Germany: which translations do I need?

Translating a foreign birth certificate and registering an overseas birth are different tasks. The registry office determines the required evidence.

Reviewed on 27 October 2026

The short answer

First clarify the competent registry office and eligibility for registration. Besides the child’s birth certificate, parents’ birth records and further family evidence may be needed. The registry office’s actual checklist determines which foreign-language records require translations and the format needed.

Clarify the office and supporting evidence

Record the place of birth, nationality and residence connections when contacting the registry office. Distinguish birth-register registration from an entry in the residents’ register.

Service Berlin describes the procedure’s eligibility and evidence, including additional parental records. Use it for orientation and obtain the competent registry office’s checklist for your application.

Organise the child’s and parents’ records together

Create separate document entries for the child and parents. Record whether each certificate is complete, multilingual or already translated, and mark additional reverse sides or marginal entries.

Official evidence and clear matching help with different name versions. Supply this information in advance; do not alter a source file yourself to make it match another record.

List originals, copies and translations separately

An image suitable for translation is not automatically the submission format required by the registry office. Clarify in advance which originals or official copies you must provide yourself.

Include the confirmed instructions with your translation enquiry. Check the completed set against the list before sending records to different offices or family members.

Your next steps

  1. Check the competent office and eligibility.

  2. List the child’s and parents’ records separately.

  3. Clarify language versions, translation and submission format.

  4. Enquire with complete files and the registry checklist.

More questions

Is the child’s birth certificate alone enough?

That depends on the checklist. Also check the requested parental and marital-status evidence.

Is entry in the residents’ register the same procedure?

No. Keep the procedures separate and ask which application matches your purpose.

Can I use existing translations?

Show existing versions to the registry office and ask specifically about any missing additions.
