Guide · Certified translations
What is a tradução certificada for Portugal?
Portuguese translation certification follows its own rules. Begin with the record and actual registry procedure rather than the word “certified” alone.

The short answer
Portugal’s Institute of Registries and Notary describes certified Portuguese translations of foreign-language documents as the general rule, with several exemptions. It identifies different permitted issuing and certification routes. Certain EU public documents may be sufficient with an adequate multilingual form; establish the actual requirement before ordering.
Check for a language exemption first
State whether the matter concerns birth, marriage, registration or another use. Have the issuing country, existing language and recipient instructions available together.
IRN explains exemptions including certain EU public records accompanied by a multilingual form. The registry service assesses whether its information is sufficient; an arbitrary multilingual file does not replace the certificate.

Record the required certification format
IRN describes different translation and certification routes, including suitable translators with additional certification. It also describes acceptance of qualified translations from EU states for certain public documents.
Confirm the route appropriate to your source. Do not assume the Portuguese term means the same thing as a Brazilian tradução juramentada or any German certification format.

Supply complete sources and the recipient’s answer
Organise every page, including existing attachments and confirmations. Supply name spellings and identify other versions so an outdated source is not used.
Enquire expressly about special Portuguese formalities. Agree an assignment once availability, language, scope and output format are established; the authority decides how the record may be used.
Your next steps
Identify the registry procedure and document type.
Check a language exemption or multilingual form.
Clarify acceptable translation certification in writing.
Enquire with the complete source and requirements.
More questions
Is translation always necessary for Portugal?
No. Check the exemptions described by IRN and the actual recipient’s decision.
Does certificada mean the same as juramentada in Brazil?
The terms belong to different procedures. Confirm the required status expressly.
Can I send only the first page?
Provide the complete source and obtain prior acceptance of any partial scope.
