Which records need translating for recognition of a foreign adoption?

An adoption decision, birth records and other procedural documents may be needed together. Build the translation assignment around the actual court checklist.

The short answer

First establish the applicable recognition procedure and document list with the competent authority. Karlsruhe Local Court describes complete foreign adoption records with translations and further evidence for certain adoptions of minors. A translated birth certificate alone is therefore not automatically the full set; translation itself does not grant recognition.

Identify the actual recognition procedure

Record the decision country, decision date and intended German recipient. Establish which records are needed in your case and their required format.

The Karlsruhe source limits its described procedure to adoptions of minors. Do not use it as a universal guide for every adoption or a decision on nationality and passport issuance.

Organise the decision and family evidence together

List the complete decision, associated procedural evidence and requested birth records before and after adoption. Match different names and versions clearly to the relevant person.

Send every page belonging to the proposed assignment, including existing confirmations. Identify missing evidence and supply the request rather than creating an abridged family summary as a substitute.

Agree translation scope and later use

Check which reports and personal records are needed for the assignment. Discuss particular confidentiality or transfer requirements before sending and have the authority’s checklist available.

Agree language, certification format and timing against the final sources. Recognition and further family-law decisions remain with the competent authorities.

Your next steps

  1. Confirm the procedure and competent recipient.

  2. Match the court checklist to available records.

  3. Check completeness and personal identification.

  4. Enquire with confirmed scope, format and timing requirements.

More questions

Does certified translation establish recognition?

No. It is language evidence within a procedure that must be established separately.

Does the cited checklist cover every adoption?

No. Check its scope and the competent authority’s individual requirements.

Is the child’s new birth certificate sufficient?

Not automatically. The checklist may also require the decision and further procedural records.
