Travel consent for children: when are translation and certification needed?
A signed letter, its translation and signature certification serve different purposes. Check what is needed for the actual itinerary.

The short answer
Germany’s Foreign Office recommends travel consent and, where appropriate, supporting records when children travel abroad without both parents. Signature certification and language requirements depend on the destination. Certified translation confirms the translated text; it replaces neither missing consent nor expressly required signature certification.
Record the destination, transit and accompanying adult
Record travel countries, dates and accompanying adults. Ask the relevant missions for binding requirements and also check the carrier’s instructions.
The Foreign Office refers to country-specific rules. An arbitrary English template or another family’s experience therefore does not establish that your records are sufficient for the intended journey.

Prepare the final consent letter before translation
Check the child’s name and date of birth, guardians’ details, contact information, itinerary and accompanying adult. Keep spellings consistent with travel documents without altering official sources.
Different family names or particular custody arrangements may make supporting evidence relevant. Establish the actual need. Travel consent does not automatically prove sole custody.
Agree translation and signature certification separately
Confirm whether the existing language is sufficient, translation is needed or a particular form is required. Also ask which authority is accepted for any signature certification.
Send the agreed final letter and requested attachments with the recipient instructions. Supply the travel date. Translation, notarial steps and legal assessment of consent are separate processes.
Your next steps
Record the itinerary, accompanying adult and dates.
Check destination and carrier requirements.
Organise final consent and necessary supporting evidence.
Clarify language, scope and separate certification steps.
More questions
Is English travel consent always sufficient?
No. Accepted language and format depend on the actual requirements.
Does the translator certify the parents’ signatures?
Translation certification does not automatically certify signatures. Arrange that step separately.
Does travel consent replace a custody record?
Not automatically. Consent to travel and evidence of custody establish different facts.
