Contract translation for a defined purpose

A contract may be translated to inform a party, support internal discussions or be submitted to a court or authority. These purposes can bring different requirements for translation and certification. Tell us who will receive the document and how it will be used.

The assignment covers the agreed source text, definitions, cross-references and attachments. Translation is not legal advice and does not assess whether provisions are appropriate or enforceable in your case. Legal review and revision of the agreement are separate tasks.

Treat defined terms consistently

Provide terminology, connected agreements and earlier versions. Identify names and labels that must remain unchanged. When a concept depends on the legal system, context and questions help establish the intended meaning rather than inventing an apparent equivalent.

Common contracts and agreements

Employment and service contracts

Duties, payment, duration and references to additional agreements are considered within the supplied version.

Purchase, supply and framework agreements

Clearly link appendices, specifications and recurring definitions to their main agreement.

Confidentiality and cooperation agreements

Identify the parties, approved terminology and how drafts or tracked changes should be handled.

If you need excerpts only, identify the pages or clauses and confirm that this form is suitable for the recipient.

  • The source and target languages, recipient, destination country and intended use.

Questions about contract translation

Does a contract need a certified translation?

The recipient and intended use determine this. A specialist translation may suit business discussions. Provide the instructions if an authority or another recipient requires certification.

Can you translate selected clauses only?

A clearly defined excerpt can be reviewed. Supply enough context and relevant definitions. First confirm whether the recipient accepts an extract rather than the complete agreement.

Will you review the contract legally?

Translation transfers the agreed text into another language. Legal advice, evaluation of contractual risks and changes to the agreement are separate from this translation assignment.

Which language version is legally binding?

Translation alone does not determine this. The parties’ agreement, any language clause and the legal context should be clarified with the appropriate adviser.

How should we provide confidential agreements?

Discuss particular confidentiality requirements before sending files. Supply only the versions needed and tell us whether an additional agreement is required before work starts.

Provide the contract and your requirements

Supply the correct version, language direction and intended use so we can help define the translation scope before ordering.
