Nursing recognition: which documents actually need translating?

A nursing diploma, professional licence and record of training hours serve different purposes. Check the translation need for each record individually.

The short answer

Follow the competent recognition authority’s current instructions. In Bavaria, certain third-country diplomas and professional licences in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese generally do not need a German translation. This exemption does not automatically cover other records, languages or German states.

Check language exemptions for each document

Bavaria’s nursing authority limits the exemption to the specified qualification and licensing records. An English transcript is therefore not automatically covered by the same exception.

Keep two lists: records confirmed as needing translation and records whose language version is already accepted. Save the relevant instruction with its date so later additions remain traceable.

Organise training and employment evidence

Separate qualification records, training content, professional authorisation and employment evidence in your files. Use clear filenames and preserve the order of related attachments.

For lengthy subject or hour records, note which versions are available. Raise illegible stamps and missing reverse sides early; translation cannot supply information absent from the source.

Coordinate translation with recognition

Tell us the German state, authority and actual document checklist. Your enquiry can then use the established scope and be extended precisely when further records arrive.

Keep final translations separate from drafts. Record submission dates and monitor the authority’s questions so instructions are not lost between the employer, applicant and translation agency.

Your next steps

  1. Identify the nursing recognition authority.

  2. List document types and original languages.

  3. Check exemptions against the requested translation scope.

  4. Enquire using the confirmed scope and requirements.

More questions

Does the Bavarian exemption apply throughout Germany?

Do not assume it applies to other states. Use the instructions from the authority processing your application.

Does the record of hours need translating too?

Check that item explicitly. An exemption for certain diplomas or licences does not automatically cover training records.

Does the translation agency decide recognition?

The recognition authority assesses your qualification. We discuss translating the records needed for that process.
