Which driving licence translations does NZTA accept?

For New Zealand, an accurate English translation is only part of the question. The issuing route accepted by NZTA must also fit your purpose.

Reviewed on 27 October 2026

The short answer

For non-English licences, NZTA identifies specific translation routes: an NZTA-authorised translation service, a diplomatic representative or the licence-issuing authority. Other specified documents may also be accepted. Ordinary German certification alone therefore does not automatically establish suitability for New Zealand.

Distinguish a visit from licence conversion

Record whether you intend to drive temporarily on your existing licence or apply for a New Zealand licence. Check the NZTA instructions corresponding to that purpose.

Clarify personal eligibility and current driving periods separately. A translation enquiry does not establish how long your particular licence permits you to drive or which other records are required.

Choose an accepted issuer

Use the official NZTA directory and its issuing-route guidance. Ask about the actual requirement rather than inferring NZTA authorisation from general sworn status or a stamp.

If you hold an international driving permit, check its use against NZTA rules. Do not assume a translation and international permit are interchangeable without checking.

Prepare legible licence details and output requirements

Have the front, reverse and issuing country available. Keep categories, dates and restrictions visible. Identify illegible fields openly so the prospective issuer can address them early.

Discuss the accepted route before ordering. An enquiry with us can clarify requirements; it does not establish NZTA authorisation or guarantee local licence conversion.

Your next steps

  1. Identify visiting or licence conversion as your purpose.

  2. Read the current NZTA guidance for that purpose.

  3. Confirm an accepted issuer and output format.

  4. Provide complete licence details through the chosen route.

More questions

Is every certified English translation accepted?

Not automatically. Check the expressly accepted issuing route as well as the language.

Does a quotation establish NZTA authorisation?

No. A particular status must be confirmed separately; use the official directory if uncertain.

Should I keep my original licence?

Check the originals to carry or present against NZTA instructions. The translation is supporting evidence.
