Which driving licence translation is valid in Japan?

The translation accepted in Japan depends on your licence and intended use. General German certification does not establish that acceptance.

The short answer

For certain foreign licences, including German licences, a Japanese translation through a recognised route is relevant. JAF describes its application routes and distinguishes temporary driving from conversion. Check current official guidance for the issuing country and purpose rather than assuming an ordinary certified Japanese translation is sufficient.

Establish the issuing country and purpose first

Record the country that issued your licence and the planned use. A recommendation for a German licence should not be assumed to apply to every other licence.

Use the JAF instructions corresponding to your purpose. Identify before applying whether the document is for temporary driving or later licence conversion.

Use a recognised translation route

Check current JAF application conditions and any alternatives identified for your situation. German sworn status does not automatically establish recognition for Japanese driving-licence purposes.

For this special case, an enquiry with us starts by clarifying the requirement. An ordinary translation price should not be confused with a confirmed JAF service or Japanese credential.

Prepare the application and travel records early

Prepare legible images of both licence sides and compare names and dates with the records needed for the chosen route. Check current application and delivery arrangements directly with the accepted issuer.

Plan processing and collection before driving. A translation decides neither personal driving eligibility nor rental conditions; check those with the relevant authority and rental company.

Your next steps

  1. Record the issuing country and intended use.

  2. Check current official JAF guidance.

  3. Select an accepted application and delivery route.

  4. Check originals and other driving requirements.

More questions

Is any certified Japanese translation sufficient?

No. Check the route expressly recognised for your licence and intended use.

Is an international driving permit always an alternative?

Do not assume this universally. Check the official guidance for your issuing country.

Does the translation guarantee a rental car?

No. Also check driving eligibility, required records and the rental company’s terms.
