When do I need a beëdigde vertaling for the Netherlands?

Check Dutch requirements by recipient, language and document type. A German-language record does not require another translation in every procedure.

The short answer

First ask whether your existing language version is accepted. NetherlandsWorldwide lists Dutch, English, French and German for its described conversion of foreign records. If sworn translation is required, clarify translator status and possible additional authentication; the format for a translation issued in the Netherlands can differ from one issued abroad.

Check existing language versions first

Record the Dutch authority or institution and actual application. Show the complete existing certificate rather than asking only for a general country rule.

Conversion of foreign records has its own eligibility rules and is one procedural example. Do not automatically apply its language list to every Dutch recipient.

Clarify translator status and place of issue

The Apostille guidance distinguishes translations by translators registered in the Netherlands from translations issued abroad. For the latter route, the source identifies an additional Apostille on the translation.

Obtain explicit confirmation of the route appropriate to your record. German sworn status or an ordinary estimate does not automatically establish compliance with a particular Dutch format requirement.

Supply the recipient’s complete instructions

Send the instructions with the source, original language and target language. Identify existing confirmations and ask whether they should form part of the agreed translation scope.

Discuss special issuing routes before ordering. Retain the accepted instructions with the final version so the agreed format remains traceable if questions arise.

Your next steps

  1. Record the recipient, procedure and existing language.

  2. Ask whether the existing version is accepted.

  3. Clarify translator status and additional format.

  4. Discuss an available issuing route using the sources.
