Exemption from a certificate of no impediment: which translations are needed?

If the required foreign certificate of no impediment cannot be supplied, an exemption procedure may be relevant. The translation assignment should match that particular procedure.

Reviewed on 28 October 2026

The short answer

Discuss the exemption with the competent registry office. It prepares the application for the higher regional court and identifies the records needed. Celle court guidance describes German translations directly from the original language, with specified exceptions. Use the checklist for your case before arranging translations or additional certification.

Start with the registry office

A certificate of single status, a certificate of no impediment and an exemption decision are different records. Ask which is needed for your nationality and intended marriage.

Hamburg court guidance routes the application through the registry office. Supply its complete translation instructions; a general checklist from another country or court is not a substitute.

Match civil status and previous marriages to the evidence

Organise the requested identity, birth and civil-status evidence for each person. Previous marriages may require additional marriage and dissolution records. Identify the marriage to which each record belongs.

Check currency requirements with the registry office, especially for civil-status certificates. Translation and certificate issue dates differ; a new translation does not make an outdated source current.

Agree direct translation and the required format

Celle court guidance generally calls for direct translation from the original language into German without an intermediate language. It also describes translator-status requirements and exceptions for certain multilingual and EU records.

Provide every page with existing endorsements. Establish language, output format and additional scope before ordering. Translation replaces neither authentication checks nor the court’s exemption decision.
