Which foreign vehicle documents does the registration office need translated?

Vehicle imports concern the vehicle’s records. These are separate from your personal driving licence and its conversion.

The short answer

Ask the competent registration office which vehicle records and languages it requires. A foreign registration certificate, technical evidence and inspection certificate serve different purposes. The federal portal specifies German translation of foreign inspection evidence for a described EU-registration procedure; this does not establish a blanket certification requirement for every vehicle document.

Identify vehicle details and document types

List the issuing country, document title and associated pages. Keep the vehicle identification number visible so related records can be matched clearly.

List registration, technical evidence, inspection reports and any purchase records separately. Do not label everything a registration certificate when the authority requests a different specific record.

Check requirements for your registration procedure

The linked federal portal page concerns a used vehicle from an EU country. Obtain the appropriate registration-office instructions for other origins or vehicle circumstances.

Ask which information is already understandable through standardised fields and what expressly needs translating. Clarify any certification requirement separately before ordering a particular output format.

Provide legible and unchanged technical information

Keep tables, figures, units, stamps and reverse sides fully visible. Photograph the records without glare or fingers obscuring entries.

Translation renders existing technical information. It replaces no inspection or registration decision. Send the confirmed instructions with the source so the assignment describes the actual document scope.

Your next steps

  1. Record the registration office and vehicle’s country of origin.

  2. List document types and connected pages.

  3. Confirm language and any certification format.

  4. Send complete legible sources with the requirement.

More questions

Is this the same translation as for my driving licence?

No. Vehicle registration and personal driving entitlement concern different documents and procedures.

Must all EU vehicle papers be translated?

Do not assume this universally. Ask about the actual record and language version required.

Does translation include technical approval?

No. Inspection, registration and language translation are separate services.
